RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate thesis work, which involved analyzing several time series of seawater temperature in two coastal lagoons adjacent to the coast of Baja California. For the first time, the spatial and temporal variability of seawater temperature in these two regions was accurately determined, revealing strong upwelling events (cold, nutrient-rich bottom waters rising to the sea surface). This made it possible to understand precisely how the region manifests itself at certain times of the year as a highly productive area. Work published in the journal Calcofi Report in 1982, it currently has over 100 scientific citations.

  • Doctoral thesis work which involved solving a 50-year-old problem of being able to obtain the statistics of the sea surface (wave statistics) from remote sensing information of sea surface brightness patterns. The solution was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Oceans in 1993. A brightness function was obtained for the one-dimensional problem and for the two-dimensional problem. It was proven that from the photographic image of the sea surface brightness patterns, it is possible to obtain the statistics of the waves that form that surface, resulting in the spectral pattern for each wavelength that makes up the set of waves on the sea surface. This provides valuable information on how a wave packet or several wave packets can propagate across the sea surface, allowing one to know at a given moment about the energy that will impact the coast. All these results were published in high-prestige journals such as Optics Communications in 1995, the Journal of Modern Optics in 1995, and the Revista Mexicana de Física in 1995.

  • The development of mathematical algorithms and optical systems to automatically detect microscopic species in a sample, such as phytoplankton (first link in the marine food chain) and zooplankton (second link in the marine food chain). This allows for the very rapid identification of highly productive oceanic waters.

  • The automatic identification of bacteria such as tuberculosis and the bacteria that causes cholera (Vibrio cholerae 01), diagnoses which are crucial in preventing such diseases.

  • Identification of viral inclusion bodies in shrimp tissue and fish parasites, which are highly important in diagnosing diseases in shrimp and fish at aquaculture farms.

  • Determination of chromosome pairs in abalone species and the development of a new methodology for calculating the amount of DNA in the chromosomes of different species. The latter is highly relevant because it allows one to differentiate one species from another and, above all, to analyze the evolutionary state of species.

  • Pioneer in the country in the processing of images of biogenic particles, such as those mentioned above.

  • Collaborator on scientific articles with fellow scientists from different parts of the world.

  • Has given over one hundred and seventy scientific lectures nationally and internationally.

  • Mentor to Ph.D. students, Master's students, and undergraduate students.

  • Multiple research visits to foreign institutions such as Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain, and national institutions such as the Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo (CIAD) in Mazatlán and the Facultad de Ingeniería at UABC in Ensenada.

  • Director of several scientific projects supported both by the institution where he works and by CONACYT and CSIC.
